Gonna go see this bad boi at Dayton today. Much excited!
I slept early so that I could wake up early and now I've woken up too early and can't sleep again :/

Juat saying... I hear it’s easy to take planes for a joyride. It could be so fast nobody would even notice you were gone!

There is a sight issue of making it airworthy again, finding JP7 fuel, getting it our of its hanger, getting to a runway and learning to fly it but I think anyone on Oppo can overcome this slight inconvenience.

I’ve seen the one in Kalamazoo a couple times. It’s the most imposing menacing thing in person. Pics do not do justice.

I’ve seen the SR71s in Dayton and DC and thr A12 at Dayton of course. I’m still excited to see it again!
Looking at it head-on gave me goosebumps *shudders*

Oooooooo
Is this at Kalamazoo?

Yes. I have some decent shots of the plane too but not handy. The exhibit hall is very nice there and the end where the SR-71 is is somewhat dark so it looks extra badass.

I vividly remember the first time I saw one of these at the Udvar-Hazy Smithsonian extension. One of the coolest things ever engineered.

I feel like I need to go to Kalamazoo. Its only 2.5hrs away from me.

You can roam around it in the U dvar-Hazy, iirc at Dayton you cannot go behind it.

I was just there with my son yesterday. I’m always in awe of that plane , along with several others (B-2 and XB-70 Valkyrie in particular). Such an awesome place. They also have a YF-12, which was the forerunner to the SR-71 and looks very similar.

They are cool planes but, I prefer the soaring majesty of the U2.
![]() 08/25/2018 at 08:02 |

Do they even make JP7 anymore?
![]() 08/25/2018 at 08:04 |

U2 is nice, but the SR71/A-12 is almost mytical imo.

Wasn't the YF-12 supposed to be the interceptor? I think Dayton has the A-12, not the YF.

They have both now. I was there last year.

My jaw dropped when I saw the Valkyrie last year. That thing is ENORMOUS!!!

Probably. According to Wikipedia, it was used in the X-51.

We were there last summer. My son and I got there when the doors opened and they had to kick us out at closing time. The new fourth hangar is amazing.

I can appreciate that it’s rare and
expensive, but
that a
sshole is taking up nine parking spaces right up front.

The A-12 was a reconnaissance aircraft, and the direct predecessor to the SR-7 1 in that role. The AF-12 was the armed interceptor variant that was built during production of the A-12. I believe the USAF Museum has one of each.

I’ve got a gal in Kalamazoo.....

That is one strikingly sexy beast.
Pity the pilot(? Or maybe ground crew in charge of placement?
)
apparently dailies a BMW or brodozer, though, looking at the parking.
